Omnibus IV: The Ancient World

Teacher: Mr. Rick Davis

Omnibus is a Latin term meaning "all encompassing." Our purpose is to have students grow in their appreciation of the unity of all knowledge. The Omnibus is arranged as a 6 year program. The first three years are a cycle of reading and studying the great books of Western Civilization in three parts: Ancient, Medieval, and Modern. The next three years cover different books from the same time periods, but go more in depth and focus on communicating ideas clearly and intelligently.

I am particularly excited about teaching the Omnibus IV material this year as it gives students an invaluable glimpse into the foundations of our Western culture. Solomon wrote that there is nothing new under the sun, and in reading the Omnibus IV books students will learn the truth of this maxim. The ancient world is a world populated by opportunistic politicians, skeptics and atheists, surprisingly modern comedies, and debates about many of the issues that continue in our society today. By learning to think biblically about these topics, students learn to confront our modern world from a broad perspective that not only attacks the symptoms, but goes to the root of the common problems in a secular society. Most importantly every book is approached from a Christian perspective and with an eye to seeing how Old Testament Israel and the New Testament Church interacted with these cultures, and how we may be equipped to interact with our culture as well.
